Most of us will have played ‘Musical Chairs’ at some point in our life – even if it was many years ago! Can you remember how you felt when you were left without a seat? Awkward? Exposed? Embarrassed?
In today’s ‘Meal with Jesus’, Jesus is eating with a notable Pharisee (one of the Jewish leaders), and he observes how many of the guests at the party are pushing themselves forward to get the best seat in the house, so that they can be noticed. Jesus tells them a parable that is a commentary on their behaviour. Like so much of Jesus’ teaching, it’s counter cultural as he explains that “those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
What does that parable say to us about our society today, and our place in it? Life isn’t a game of musical chairs, yet we can easily see that many are left without a seat. Join us on Sunday as Frances and Jackie help us to reflect on the deeper meaning of this passage.
