This Sunday is Pentecost, the Church festival where we celebrate how the disciples were first given the gift of the Holy Spirit after Jesus ascended to heaven following His resurrection. The Holy Spirit is variously called the ‘Helper’, ‘Advocate’, ‘Comforter’ or Counsellor’ depending on which bible translation you are reading and Jesus makes His purpose plain. In John 14:26 Jesus says that He “…will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” He is to be a constant guide and teacher in our walk of faith, and will show us the way to fruitful living.
In his letter to the church in Galatia, Paul describes that fruit that the Holy Spirit produces as “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” Over the next few weeks we’re going to be looking at a selection of those fruits of the Spirit, and Jackie and Fliss are starting us off this Sunday by thinking about ‘joy’. I can’t think of two people who are more qualified than they are to bring joy to our Sunday service! So if you can, do join us in the building or online.
Everyone is welcome at Wooler URC.
