We’ve been reflecting during Advent on the theme of waiting. This is Christmas Eve, and our last Sunday before Christmas, and I think we can agree that getting ready for Christmas involves a lot of waiting. We wait in supermarket queues, we wait to open presents, we wait for the family to turn up, we wait for the turkey to be cooked. Yet in the middle of all this waiting, is it possible that we’ve forgotten the most important waiting of all: the waiting for a baby. Not just any baby, but the baby, Jesus. As we turn to the familiar readings about Mary, Joseph and Elizabeth, in these passages we see patient waiting fulfilled.
