The weather may not have got into summer mode yet, but undaunted, we start our summer service series this Sunday. Over the next few weeks, we’re going to be thinking about some of the meals that people shared with Jesus. Our readings are largely drawn from Luke’s gospel, and they look at the encounters Jesus had around a meal table. If we imagine ourselves sitting at the dinner table with Jesus, we see who he is more clearly: his decision-making, his compassion and his bravery. What do we think of him? Do we like him? Do we trust him? Will we dare to follow him? Each week we’re going to be looking in detail at a meal that Jesus shared with others, and considering what lessons we can draw from that encounter. Perhaps we’ll also be challenged about how we show hospitality to others… Patrick starts the series by looking at Levi (better known as Matthew) – a tax collector who left everything to follow Jesus, and then threw a party for him and invited all his tax collector mates. No wonder the Jewish leaders challenged him, and said: ‘Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?’ Jesus response to their rebuke was life-changing. Join us on Sunday to hear more.
Everyone is welcome at Wooler URC.
